Unschlitt Square
Small square, big impact.
Situated south of the Pegnitz between Maxbrücke and Henkersteg, Unschlittplatz seems almost inconspicuous at first glance - and that is precisely what makes it so charming. Anyone entering the neighbourhood quickly realises that Nuremberg is a little different here: quieter. More intimate. And at the same time full of the concentrated history that Nuremberg is known for. Hardly any other place in the Old Town combines so much romantic flair, historical significance and relaxed city feeling in such a small space.
In addition to the bagpiper fountain and characteristic rows of houses with exposed half-timbering, the typical Nuremberg bay windows and wooden figure decorations on the façades, the striking Unschlitthaus, which gave the square its name, stands at the centre of the quarter.
The Unschlittamt, a municipal authority for the purchase and administration of animal fat - the Unschlitt - used to be located here. Butchers were legally obliged to deliver their fat waste to the municipality so that the city could then sell it to other businesses at fixed prices: Tallow candle manufacture, soap manufacture, lubricant production...
It's a bit crooked and ‘bugglert’ - as we say in Franconia - our rough track. Slightly on a slope, but not really, a little crooked cobblestone pavement & lots of twists and turns. And that also contributes to the charm of the neighbourhood. With its location directly on the Pegnitz, the square invites you to linger - whether on one of the benches or in one of the restaurants, cafés or bars.
Despite its manageable size, Unschlittplatz is a meeting place for all those who want to experience Nuremberg at its cosiest. A place where the idyll of the old town and relaxed urbanity come together quite naturally. Once you sit here, you soon realise that you don't need much space to be a real favourite.
Our favourite spot? This time it's more of a moment: when you stroll through Obere Wörthsstrasse and come across Unschlittplatz, the sun is at the right angle and lights up this little cosmos of its own - then Unschlittplatz unfolds its full effect.
