Nägeleinsufer

New perspectives on the water

The area of today's Nägeleinsufer was already a diversely utilised part of Nuremberg's old town centre in the Middle Ages. From the 15th century onwards, the so-called Nägeleinsmühlen characterised the landscape along the Pegnitz. A total of twelve mill wheels utilised the river's water power for various craft and industrial purposes. It was these mills that gave the square its current name. A shallow water access at the Kettensteg served as a watering place for horses and was also a popular playground for children. The river was thus an integral part of urban life and easily accessible. The surrounding area was characterised by dense medieval buildings, which made up the typical appearance of Nuremberg's old town.

The area was severely damaged during the air raids in 1943. Many of the historic buildings and structures, including the mills, were destroyed or badly damaged. After the war, the city built a wall along the Pegnitz to protect it from flooding, preventing direct access to the river.

Open access to the Pegnitz

The current redesign of the Nägelein embankment aims to revitalise these historical qualities and restore the former connection to the river. And it has really succeeded! A new favourite place has been created in the middle of the old town: The Nägeleinsufer combines urban greenery, clear design and direct proximity to the Pegnitz. And you can discover it now!

The new promenade stretches along the riverbank and connects Karlstraße, Nägeleinsplatz, Maxplatz and the Kettensteg to form a continuous green path: seating under old and new trees, a flower meadow, natural riverside areas and plenty of space to linger.

Ecological improvements are also being made: new trees, shrubs, flowering meadows and over 10,000 early bloomers are bringing diversity back to the city - and making it more resilient to climate change. Whether for a break by the water, a cycle ride to work or a stroll through the old town: Nägeleinsufer shows how the city can reinvent itself - open, green and a real insider tip!
