Kasper Hauser, who appeared in Nuremberg in 1828 as a “mysterious foundling,” was fed only vegetarian food in his dungeon. For this reason, the then 16-year-old did not want to eat meat even after he was freed. But since the small grilled sausages were not comparable to other sausages, he ate them! In the Middle Ages, there was a curfew. To provide refreshments for guests arriving in Nuremberg late at night, the bratwurst sausages were passed through the keyhole. Nuremberg was known for its many – and above all small – taverns. This meant that the sausages also had to be adapted in size! That is why they are only half the size of sausages in the rest of Franconia. Now we go underground: prisoners were supplied with the small sausages through holes in the walls – hence the name “hole prisons”! When city judge Hans Stromer, convicted of espionage and embezzlement, was thrown into the tower for 38 years in 1554, he had one last wish: to be allowed to eat two Nuremberg bratwursts every day. A total of 28,000 sausages were passed through the keyhole into his dungeon!
