Lotos

The first health food shop in Nuremberg

It all began in 1977 in Gostenhof, in a small shop that was somehow also a flat, but fortunately had a shop window. Back then, the shop was called ‘Tea & Herbs’ and that's all it was at first. However, the idea that would take on its final form 10 years later had long existed in the minds of Ulrike Wolf and her mother Lilo: an organic shop with an extensive range, combined with an organic restaurant and café. A place where the big picture counts, sustainability is the focus and people are there to help and advise each other.

‘It's about more than just healthy eating’

Lotos is not just a health food shop, but an overall construct. ‘We do the groundwork here!’ - literally: here, for example, there are not only seeds of all kinds, but also the corresponding expertise. ‘You can only sell seeds if you know your stuff!’ The same applies to everything else you can buy at Lotos - advice is part of the identity. Here you can not only get juicy apricots from a farmer friend, but also a few tips on how to make a delicious jam or tasty chutney from fruit that is no longer so plump. Two members of staff are also trained nutritionists and can go into even more depth when it comes to nutrients.

Speaking of the overall concept:

Not all organic products are the same

The regulations for controlled organic cultivation are one thing - but sustainability can (and should) go further. This is exactly what Lotos embodies. All items in the shop are hand-picked and carefully checked for all ingredients. Farmers, bakers and other businesses that supply Lotos with goods are predominantly regional and have been in direct personal contact for many years.

‘In the beginning, people thought we were Plem Plem’

... and that was one of the nicer phrases. ‘Radical lunatics’ was the phrase used when Ulrike and her co-founders opened Lotos. In the 1980s, organic food was still an exotic niche - not to mention vegetarian or even vegan diets. ‘People were almost stunned when they asked us what you could cook with vegetables’. Today, the Lotos concept no longer serves a marginalised society. ‘We have arrived in the centre of society - we have achieved our goal!’

Tastes like grandma's

At Lotos, you can not only shop sustainably, but also enjoy a wide range of food. In addition to the café with all kinds of baked goods and a wide variety of cakes from regional bakeries, there is a daily changing vegetarian and vegan menu (find out what's on the menu today here: https://www.naturkostladen-lotos.de/tagesmen%C3%BC/) What's on the plate is regional and in season - all food from the restaurant's own display.

The Lotos also offers catering! From a cheese platter for a small get-together to a wedding with 200 guests - just ask and have something customised to your wishes. For a few years now, Lotos has also been supplying neighbouring kindergartens with freshly cooked lunches every day.

‘Food is a work of art’

That's why nothing is thrown away at Lotos: Once a week, leftover fruit and vegetables are delivered to regional social projects.
