Lebkuchen Schmidt
From Nuremberg in the whole wide world
Everything began by accident, but today this Nuremberg company is the oldest mail-order business for gingerbread and other baked goods in the world. The goal is still the same: Provide the whole world with Nuremberg delicacies! A package from Lebkuchen Schmidt at Christmas has become a tradition for many - that's what Grandma used to send.
Traditional recipes despite a growing assortment
The basic recipes for gingerbread & Co. have not changed for 100 years. But they are always working on new creations in the company's own experimental kitchen. Most important? The classic Christmas character shouldn't be lost. That's why there are always new versions of the classic Elise, for example a lebkuchen only with honey or completely without sugar. Every season there is a new gingerbread of the year.
Family & Traditions
Until her death in 2014, Henriette Schmidt-Burkhardt, daughter-in-law of founder Emil Otto Schmidt, appeared every day in the company - until she was 86. Although technically the gingerbread factory is no longer in the hands of one family, nothing has changed within the firm - the long-established company continues with its family traditions.
More gingerbread bakers
In addition to Lebkuchen Schmidt, this delicious Nuremberg specialty is baked by other companies. Every gingerbread baker has its own personal style. What does that mean for you? You should try them all!
Fraunholz
The family-owned company has produced lebkuchen since 1911. In the assortment there is also a vegan alternative - instead of honey and egg whites, it contains apricot jam and water.
Woitinek:
Here you'll find moist lebkuchen with somewhat chunkier nuts baked according to a family recipe. They are produced and sold in heart of Nuremberg's south. Have a look!
Döllner:
Markus Döllner is not only Master of the Nuremberg Federation of Bakers, but also has an eye on the quality of these baked goods through his "Association for the Protection of Nuremberg Lebkuchen".
Witte:
Innovation is important! Whether it's "summer gingerbread" in fruity varieties or lebkuchen candy - there's always new energy brought into the traditional basic recipe.
Nusselt:
The gingerbread bakery has been running for four generations, but trends have never been ignored. It is usually the icing that changes; take, for example, the new flavor "Salted Caramel". The dough remains the traditional Nuremberg Elisen recipe.
Marx:
A special form of this treat are the Lebkugeln from Wolfgang Marx. Every season he sells thousands of handmade truffle pralines made of chocolate, original Nuremberg Elisenlebkuchen, cream and spices. They should be on your Christmas list!
Düll:
The best seller in the Lebküchnerei Düll is the variety with dark chocolate - but their assortment will make anyone happy. In their beautiful tins and chests, this delicacy is a favorite Christmas present!
