History & Sights

In the Castle District

Nuremberg was settled by 1050 and, in the late Middle Ages, became one of the most important imperial cities in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Its symbol then as now is the Imperial Castle, which crowns the Old Town. The castle is surrounded by floral parks such as the castle garden, which are a lovely place to take a walk. A tour of the five-kilometer-long Nuremberg city wall, which surrounds the Old Town, is also worth the effort.
