If you stand very close to the fountain and listen carefully, you can hear an underground train arrive. Between the sculptured figures, you can see the bars of the ventilation shaft, which is very well hidden! Would you have seen it without this hint?

The materials and form were chosen very deliberately. The form is a large rosette – its counterpart can be seen in the rose window of St. Lawrence. The frame of the pool is made of marble and figures are cast bronze. This is closely linked to the historical background of the fountain. In the past, bronze casting was the metal founding process for which Nuremberg was famous. That’s because one needs a special sand to form the figures, which occurs naturally here.

He was married twice (so had experience with married life) and wrote many contemporary – and also critical of his time -verses.  Above all, at the time of the Reformation, he ranted against authority. The reaction was a sentence which we still know today: “Cobbler, stay with your forms”. Hans Sachs was a cobbler, but also one of the Meistersinger of Nuremberg.
