The Post Coach

Lofty & magnificent

Loud clatter of hooves lets you know it's coming: The historical post coach at the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt! When the yellow wagon comes their way, visitors big and small turn their heads to take a good look at the massive horses and coach. Have you ever ridden in a post coach? If not, put a coach trip through Christmas-y Nuremberg on your bucket list!

The coach is a 1939 reproduction of a nine-seater Berline with two coupés, that is two compartments, from 1874. (Just in case you want to impress your friends with your knowledge.) The Museum for Communication, which is dedicated to the history of communication and transport, has loaned this coach and a post omnibus for the rides since 1950.

Start of the rides: Waaggasse, next to the IHK

Length: Ca. 10 minutes

Tickets:  At the departure point

In harness are two horses from the stall of carriage operator Lehneis, who has proudly braved wind and weather high on the coach box for more than 30 years. Aboard is also a postillion, who entertains his "fellow travelers" with Christmas songs from his shining horn and gives signals for the "departure of the post coach" and its "arrival". Inside, the guests experience a cozy ride in the thick upholstery and enjoy the view of the Christmas splendor of the Weißgerbergasse. This nostalgic tour feels noble and gives a striking impression of how expensive a trip in a post coach once was - something that in the past only the well-to-do could afford. And one shouldn't forget, before trains, the post coach was the only means of transport of letters, goods of all types and people.
