Weinmarkt 6

Praunsches Foundation House

The building with house number 6 is the former Praunsche Stiftungshaus. Until 1801, 10,000 precious objects from the patrician family Praun were on display here. Paintings, drawings, prints (including Albrecht Dürer’s entire catalog of prints), sculpture, books, coins and jewels were part of the inventory. The collection attracted so much attention at that time that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited it in 1797.

Courtyard of Weinmarkt 6

Not only is the history behind the façade a true treasure: The inner courtyard of the property is known today as the most beautiful in Nuremberg. Did the three stories of carved tracery fascinate Goethe as well?
